Dojo University: What Should I Do?

Just like a real-world university, Dojo U has an almost unimaginable amount of material that one could choose to dive into.

So, what should you do? Here’s our advice.

The Zoomed Out View

We call our bagpipe school the “Piper’s Dojo” because we are focused on helping you develop your own unique voice as a musician. We want you to play the bagpipes as an extension of your Self.

What's the plan to achieve this? We call it the "Dojo Way"...

The “Dojo Way” in 100 Words

Every day: listen to masterful bagpipe music, interact with bagpipers as good or better than you, and play at least one tune on full bagpipes.

Most days: hone essential fundamentals, in this order of priority:

  1. Rhythmic Accuracy
  2. Scale Navigation
  3. Gracenote Quality
  4. Blowing Mechanics/Posture
  5. Tuning drones together
  6. Maintaining optimal blowing pressure.
  7. Tuning drones to chanter
  8. Avoiding “Mental Blowing Anomalies”
  9. Embellishment
  10. “Expression” Technique

Practice using as wide an array of tunes as humanly possible. Be wary of routine! Keep practice very short, singularly focused, and objective. Afterwards, play in moderation strictly for enjoyment.

Regularly put yourself in new, challenging musical situations. Play for self-expression, never for accolades.

Everyone:

  1. Start with the 11 Commandments of Mastery.

This is our way of approaching the mastery-oriented mindset. Your mindset is the lever that moves the world of learning. It may amaze you to find that your approach to learning music is what’s been holding you back - not your challenges with technique.

Click here to get started learning our “11 Commandments of Mastery.”

  2. Read Finding Bagpipe Freedom

Finding Bagpipe Freedom is a physical book written in 2021, all about the Dojo approach to bagpipe learning and technique. How do we gain control over the 10 objective bagpipe fundamentals, so that we can truly express ourselves? This book does a deep dive, and will get your imagination revved up to attack learning the pipes in a whole new way.

You can get a free copy of Finding Bagpipe Freedom by clicking here. (You’ll just pay shipping)

Alternatively, for an absolutely-free look at these concepts, you can check out the Piper's Dojo Podcast to listen to discussions on many of the chapters and concepts from the book.

  3. Play the Tune of the Week!

Every week we look at a brand new bagpipe tune. This will expose us to a wide variety of tunes over time, and therefore we'll be exposed to a diverse combination of rhythms, melodies, gracenote patterns, and more!

Whether you are beginner, advanced, young, old, a quick learner, a slow learner, a good sight-reader, a bad sight reader, (and so on, and so on)... play that tune of the week!

Note to beginners: You may not be able to play the full tune yet, but can you play some of it? Some of the rhythms maybe? Let's find out! Make sure to mix the tune of the week into your daily practice.

Each week's Tune of the Week is posted on your Dashboard.

Beginners:

  1. Piper’s Dojo Beginner’s Tutor
Learn or relearn essential bagpipe fingerwork, culminating with 16 fully-embellished classic bagpipe tunes. At the Dojo, we use a “layered” approach to learning bagpipe fingerwork, as opposed to the “linear” learning approach usually taught. Click here to visit the Tutor
  2. Transitioning to the Bagpipes
The moment you can get your hands on a full set of bagpipes, you should start the process of “transitioning” from the practice chanter to the full bagpipes. The Transitioning to the Bagpipes Course starts you from absolute square one (taking the pipes out of the shipping box for the first time), all the way through to performing your full, self-tuned bagpipe. Even if you’ve already played a bit on full pipes, we highly recommend “rebooting” your skills by working through this course start to finish. Click here to visit the Transitioning Course.

Intermediate/Advanced Players:

  1. Double-Check Your Work
Consider spending time with our Beginner’s Tutor and Transitioning to the Bagpipes courses. Even though you’ve been playing for a long time, you may find that the secret to moving forward with your playing is by correcting holes in your game that are left over from when you were a beginner.
  2. Rhythm for Bagpipers
Rhythm is the foundation of everything we'll ever do with our bagpipe fingerwork. But, do you really understand it? Are you really comfortable with it? Click here to visit the Rhythm for Bagpipers Course
  3. Fingerwork Fundamentals
For players with a decent degree of pre-existing experience playing a variety of bagpipe tunes, this course breaks down bagpipe fingerwork into its fundamental objective components, helping you develop a whole new level of understanding and ability. Click here to go to Fingerwork Fundamentals.
  4. The Great Bagpipe Tuning Algorithm
While the Transitioning Course teaches us the basics of getting the pipes going, the “Great Algorithm” course goes all the way down the rabbit hole of bagpipe sound and tuning. Click here to go to the Great Bagpipe Tuning Algorithm
  5. Earn Your Bagpipe Freedom
Do you have true control over the 10 fundamental bagpipe skills? Our Bagpipe Freedom Phase Testing program will put you to the test. Click here to start your journey towards Bagpipe Freedom.
