The REAL Secret to Building Stamina
Oct 13, 2024Ever found it hard to get back into piping after a break? Even after a short hiatus, it can be exhausting to play for even a short time until your stamina builds again.
So what's the best way to get your piping fitness back?
Obviously, just like trying to get physically fit if you've taken some time off hitting the gym, you need to be working out consistently and in incrementally longer sessions.
But what if instead of setting yourself a strict practice regime to get back to peak piping form... you just focused on making it as fun as possible?
Stamina should be a natural byproduct of fun, engaging practice.
After all, would you rather put yourself through long, gruelling, potentially painful sessions for weeks until you're back to being able to play long sets back to back? Or are you more likely to stick with it if you make piping something fun and joyful to do?
"Fun" looks different for everyone. Maybe for you it's working through some new tunes that get your toes tapping and inspire you to get some new sets under your fingers. Maybe it's getting some new gear – a new practice chanter, or finally cleaning up an old set of pipes your uncle left you. Maybe it's playing some old favourites that you haven't had a chance to perform for a long time. Think about what it is that lights that spark of fun in you, and do it!
Having a comfortable instrument to play is vital too. If your setup is leaking air or making you bust a gut on a reed that's too hard, you're not going to be having a good time, and you'll be dreading picking up your pipes. So spend a little extra time on maintenance – check those joints, pick a reed that's right for you right now, and set up an instrument that you'll want to play every day.
