Bagpipe Budgeting: Play the Pipes Without Breaking the Bank
Jan 15, 2024Playing the bagpipes is a unique joy, but let's face it – it comes with a price tag.
So if you're serious about playing pipes, how much should you consider setting aside to fund your hobby?
Reeds, pipe bags, and other parts all need to be replaced regularly – and then there's unexpected costs like damaged parts, new chanters, travel, lessons, and much more.
It can help to consider the cost-benefit of quality. For example, while a premium-quality chanter from a reputable maker may cost a couple hundred bucks, it's more likely to last over a decade – so it can help to think of it as a $15-a-year investment over its 10-year lifespan, and budget accordingly.
And synthetic drone reeds, though pricier initially, can last for several years, making their annual cost surprisingly manageable. On the flip side, chanter reeds, with a shorter lifespan, might have you spending around $60 a month, even if they seem cheaper as an individual item.
Don't overlook the importance of maintenance either! Traditional sheepskin bags offer a classic sound but demand regular seasoning and replacement every two years. But synthetic bags are more durable, last linger, and so can provide a cost-effective option, reducing the overall expense of bagpipe upkeep.
Your decision on all of these might be influenced by other factors too, like your pipe major's preference for your band, or your own preferences for tone and comfort, but thinking of the "cost per use" can be a handy way to forecast your spend on consumable parts.
If you're serious about playing a well maintained and playable instrument, it might cost somewhere upwards of $500 a year to maintain it. And that's before you take into account other additional expenses that may pop up, like travel costs, lessons, workshops, kilts, uniforms, apps, metronomes, gadgets – the list goes on!
Of course, if you pick up a paying gig or two, you might be able to mitigate these somewhat too – or even break even (or profit!) if you're lucky...
